Skincare Products: Aloe vs. Water

Despite all the advancements in modern medicine and research, nearly all the acne treatment products on the market today, including Proactiv, are water based. While water is one of the best things for people to drink, it is not one of the most beneficial ingredients for skin care products. It is impossible for water based acne products to be fully helpful because human skin does not absorb water from the outside, therefore these products cannot penetrate and moisturize the skin. There are several side effects that can occur while using these products including: dry and itchy skin, peeling of their skin as well as red blotchy spots that are hard to hide.

In order to make sure you are getting the best acne product for your money, and not wasting it on a water based cream or ointment that will just dry out your skin, it is important to look for acne treatments that are aloe-vera based. Aloe-vera contains over 75 nutrients with a total of over 200 active compounds, which means it is full of skin beneficial minerals that water lacks. Aloe based skin care products will help eliminate skin inflammation and make the healing process faster.

The Benefits of Aloe Vera

All skincare products start with a base. Most over-the-counter and physician-dispensed moisturizers and exfoliants are water based. In fact, 99% of the skincare products on the market today start with water as the base and then add other ingredients to make the product. The problem with this is that our skin can’t absorb water. This is where the importance of using aloe-based skincare products comes in. There are several facts about aloe vera.

Did you know?

The thick, clear gel inside aloe vera plants contain over 75 different key nutritional compounds which are either required or beneficial.

Aloe Vera gently cleanses and penetrates deep into the tissue to heal, rejuvenate and protect damaged skin, making it ideal for daily use with a hand and body lotion or skin toner.

Aloe Vera is moisturizing for the skin, penetrating right down into its deepest layers.

Aloe naturally modulates the immune system thus helping the body to defend itself and it is naturally anti-inflammatory.

Benefits of Pharmaceutical Grade Aloe

Look at all the products in the skincare aisles at your local drug store and you’ll most likely find a dozen products claiming to offer the healing benefits of aloe. While these products do contain a form of aloe, they do not contain pharmaceutical grade aloe because it is too expensive. Instead, they often use dehydrated aloe to save money while sacrificing results.

When looking for aloe skin care products, it’s important to look for products that contain pure, pharmaceutical grade aloe as the number one ingredient. These products might cost more than the products you find at a drug store, but that’s because they user better ingredients to deliver better results.

Benefits of Aloe Vera Skin Care Products

Most over-the-counter and physician-dispensed moisturizers and exfoliants are water-based. However, skin cannot absorb water, and that is why the best way to incorporate water into skincare is by staying hydrated. What does that mean for skincare? This is where Aloe Vera comes into play.

What are the benefits of aloe vera skin care products? Aloe contains amino acids, minerals, vitamins, enzymes, proteins, polysaccharides as well as biological stimulators. Additionally, Aloe contains an agent that helps with inflammation. The Aloe industry has established high ethical standards for business as well as for their Aloe products. Through the International Aloe Science Council (IASC), the industry has solidified its dedication to providing the world with the highest quality Aloe.

Aloe Vera lotions are widely used for cleansing the skin, such as an acne cleanser or makeup remover. Many of the skin care products containing aloe Vera are also fortified with Vitamin E and collagen to maintain the skin's elasticity and suppleness and keep the moisture in. Aloe Vera can also greatly enhance the skin and its ability to replenish skin cells.

Have you incorporated Aloe Vera into your skincare routine?

Aloe is not aloe, is not aloe!

There are so many product lines available today and most have learned how to use the ingredient Aloe Vera as a “buzzword” to get people to buy their products. I have clients say all the time that their product line contains aloe, so they assume that's already a good thing. But the question is, “Is all aloe created equal?” All aloe is not created equal.

 It’s a matter of concentration.

Many companies tout the use of Aloe Vera in their products. But what they don’t tell you is that Aloe Vera must be used in high concentrations to insure that its benefits will be realized. In order to achieve this, Aloe must be used as the base or first ingredient in the product.

Unfortunately, water-based products comprise nearly the entire skin care market. This means that water is their main ingredient. This is true even for products that use the word “Aloe” in their name! Don’t believe it? Check the labels- by law, ingredients must be listed in order of their concentration. Invariably, some form of water will be first on the list. This is true across the spectrum, from bargain brands to elite boutique brands in their ultra-fancy packaging.

 Therapeutic or not Therapeutic?

The primary goal of a good health product is to be therapeutic and safe. To be therapeutic means that the product has real healing properties that work to better your internal or external health.

Water-based products are essentially non-therapeutic. If you want to make a water-based product therapeutic, you’ll have to add medicines to the product formula. Often, this puts consumers at risk due to adverse side effects. In contrast, Aloe-based products are therapeutic by their nature- they provide their healing properties without the need for additional medicines.

 Harvesting to Insure Bioactivity

Another thing not commonly known is that Aloe’s unique healing ingredients will start to decompose and lose their effectiveness immediately after harvesting. This situation can be compounded by inferior processing. What happens is this: when aloe leaves are crushed an enzyme is activated that begins to break down Aloe’s active ingredients or polysaccharides. In time, the enzyme will proceed to digest most of Aloe’s beneficial polysaccharides like a termite digests wood.

To avoid the break down of benefits, the Aloe must be quickly processed and “stabilized.” How quickly? Most experts agree that it must be processed within 4-6 hours of harvesting. This ensures that the harvested Aloe will be “bioactive,” meaning it will retain its therapeutic healing properties and work synergistically with your body’s own healing mechanisms. What’s more, effective processing requires that Aloe’s molecular structure be stabilized, standardized, freeze-dried, and ground to a powder or created into a gel- all within the 4-6 hour time allotment! As you can imagine, harvesting and processing high grade Aloe in this manner is quite a costly proposition. This fact alone deters many brands from using quality Aloe in their products.

 Two Flavors of Aloe

The two main types of Aloe used in health products are “inner fillet” or “whole leaf.” Inner fillet Aloe is made by innerfilletremoving the outer rind and harvesting only the interior of the stalk. Whole leaf Aloe has a dedicated following, but nearly all research work on Aloe has been done using inner-fillet, giving it a proven scientific track record.

 Grading Aloe

Product ingredients are classified into five quality grades. In descending order, they are pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic, reagent and technical. Pharmaceutical Grade means that the ingredient is 100% pure- this designation can be applied to Aloe as well. Skin care products typically use Cosmetic Grade ingredients, with Pharmaceutical Grade usually reserved for medical and pharmaceutical applications.

 International Certification

How can you tell if a product contains properly harvested, bio-active Aloe? The anser is certification. The IASC, International Aloe Science Council is an international body of scientists that gives its seal of approval to Aloe that meets only the most stringent of quality standards.

 Aloe By Lexli

 Expert on Board

Lexli’s commitment to Aloe Vera is rooted in the medical experience of our very own Dr. Abdullah. His familiarity with this incredible substance began during his residency. At the time, his mentors Dr. Martin C. Robson, Chairman of the American Board of Plastic Surgeons, and John P. Heggers, Ph.D were researching the healing effects of Aloe on frostbite and burn patients.

Dr. Abdullah formally sat on the board of the International Aloe Science Council. He is a recognized expert on Aloe and gives seminars on its application in a clinical environment. Countless patients at his clinic have benefited from his knowledge of Aloe. In fact, seeing its healing effects first-hand is what led Dr. Abdullah to choose Aloe as the primary ingredient for Lexli’s line of essential skincare products.

 Grading of Aloe

So how does the Aloe used in Lexli’s product stack up?

-We use 100% pure Pharmaceutical Grade Aloe.

-We use USDA and EU certified organic Aloe.

-We use only premium quality inner-fillet Aloe.

-We are able to deliver the therapeutic benefits of Aloe due to high concentration of Aloe in our products.

 Our mission is Aloe

As we have learned, Aloe Vera can be a potent healing agent with many wonderful results- but only if all of the factors discussed earlier are present. In most cases, this is not true and precious benefits are lost. Enter Lexli.

Lexli was created to be a source of affordable and effective Aloe-based products. Indeed, it is our core mission to bring you the pure healing power of premium quality Aloe Vera.
