What’s The Difference Between Whiteheads & Blackheads?

Both blackheads and whiteheads are very similar. The main difference, which is the color, is due to the exposure blackheads get to the air: the oxidation process. A blackhead is a comedone formed when the opening of the follicle becomes wider than normal. Because the follicle opening is wider, the sebum and the trapped dead skin cells in there react chemically with the air, resulting in the oxidation of melanin, which in turn causes the dark coloration of the blackhead. Black heads are usually found in your t-zone; but, depending on the individual, blackhead clusters can be found on the chin and the forehead. On the other hand, a whitehead is a comedone formed from a hair follicle that is not open to the air. It is also clogged with sebum and trapped dead skin cells, but the lack of exposure to the air does not lead to the oxidation of melanin, thus the clogged matter stays white. Generally whiteheads are found near the cheekbone and nose in the appearance of a tiny pearl-like pattern and can even be invisible to the eye.

To prevent future whiteheads, avoiding touching your face with your hands. This dramatically decreases the amount of oil and acne causing bacteria that come in contact with your face. In addition, minimize or all together eliminate trying to pop your whiteheads because it almost certainly leads to an infection. Make sure to wash your face daily with skin care products that are designed to keep your pores clear with drying up your skin.

To prevent blackheads, there are several daily activities you should incorporate into your daily routine:

  • Wash your face with a potent acne cleanser and moisturizer that is gentle enough to not cause any further damage to your skin.
  • Make sure to get a little bit of sun every day.
  • If you have oily hair, keep it away from your face

The key to prevention of acne, either whiteheads or blackheads, is maintaining appropriate cleansing hygiene. In addition, make sure to use high quality acne products to attain beautiful clear skin
