Skin Care Through the Decades

One size does not fit all when it comes to taking care of your skin with each stage of life. As you age, your skin changes. In fact, it can run the gamut from acne prone in your early 20s to drier and more sensitive in your 40s and beyond! And because your skin’s needs change, so too should your skin care routine (although the need for a good skin care regimen NEVER changes). Developing good skin care habits in your 20s and 30s will set the stage for beautiful and healthy skin in your 40s, 50s and beyond. But don’t fear if you have not yet started and are on the backside of your 20s. It’s never too late to start achieving healthy and beautiful skin through a good skin care regimen. The key is to get started. Read through our recommendations for skin care through the decades.

Skin Care in Your 20s

This is the age where your skin is youthful and glowing. And why wouldn’t it be? Your skin’s collagen and elastin production are at healthy levels, which work together to give your skin its texture, shape and youthful appearance. Wrinkles are at a minimum and nothing is sagging. But it may not be all a bed of roses. Some of you are still struggling with acne while others may be struggling with redness but no matter your situation, here are few tips to help maintain or achieve healthy and youthful skin.

  • Begin a proper skin care routine that is easy to maintain. (Hint: learn more about your skin type and the recommended skin care steps by taking the Lexli  Skin Type quiz.)
  • Exfoliate regularly with a glycolic acid exfoliator.
  • Protect your skin with sunscreen EVERYday. (The easiest way to get it is through a  day moisturizer with SPF.)
  • Keep your skin hydrated with a moisturizer appropriate for your skin type.
  • Start early with a firming eye cream.
  • Remove makeup EVERY night.

Skin Care in Your 30s

If you have been neglecting your skin, now is the time to take skin care seriously. You may begin to notice minor dark spots and fine expression lines starting to emerge. Some of you are likely dealing with acne scars or the effects of life stresses that can wreak havoc on your skin. Your skin’s ability to repair itself is also not quite what it used to be. Here are a few tips to consider in this phase:

  • Continue with a good skin care regimen (or start one if you haven’t already).
  • Exfoliate regularly with a glycolic acid exfoliator.
  • Start with anti aging skin care products .
  • Pay attention to your eyes – develop a consistent habit of using a firming eye cream .
  • ALWAYS wear SPF.
  • Begin wearing a noncomedogenic foundation not only to even out skin tone, but as an added layer of protection between your skin and UV rays.
  • If you are not in the habit of removing your makeup EVERY night, get into it!

Skin Care in Your 40s

The 40s are the new 30s but (hopefully) without the acne. If you have maintained a consistent skin care routine over the years, your skin should be in pretty good shape. But slowly, the body begins a steady decline of estrogen. This causes collagen production to drop, which leads to drier and less firm skin. And, drier, less firm skin leads to wrinkles. If you give your skin some TLC at this age, you can minimize and sometimes even prevent the dryness, dullness and those fine lines and wrinkles that are beginning to appear. Here’s a plan for the best skin care in your 40s:

  • Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize – make sure your skin care routine includes a night moisturizer that is rich in emollients and humectants that lock in moisture and a hydrating moisture serum to deliver nutrients deep within the skin layers.
  • Ramp up your arsenal with anti aging skin care products that will minimize the damage on your skin while improving overall skin function.
  • ALWAYS wear SPF.
  • Exfoliate regularly with a glycolic acid exfoliator.
  • Continue to pamper your eyes - firming eye cream is especially important at this age.
  • Don’t forget your neck – be sure to include your neck as you apply your skin care routine.
  • Eat a diet rich in antioxidant foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, and milk to nurture your skin from the inside.

Skin Care in Your 50s

Menopause affects most women in their 50s and with that, estrogen levels continue to drop and so does collagen production. But there is hope for combatting the saggy and significantly drier skin that is common at this age.

  • Use a gentle cleansing lotion that won’t dry out your skin.
  • Exfoliate regularly with a glycolic acid exfoliator.
  • Make the eyes a priority with a firming eye cream that contains powerful peptides that boost collagen production.
  • Use a hydrating sunscreen daily.
  • Moisturize morning and evening.
  • Include a peptide serum with an advanced formulation of peptides to encourage the skin’s natural process of collagen formation.

More and more adults of all ages are struggling with acne. Getting it under control can oftentimes be challenging but with a proper acne skin care routine that includes a comprehensive treatment approach addressing the main causes of acne, breakouts can be eliminated and, in many cases, completely controlled.
