Why is Aloe Good for the Skin?

“We think of aloe as a pharmacy in a plant.”

  • 2100BC - 1820AD

Aloe was first included in the United States Pharmacopoeia in 1820, but records of its restorative abilities have been found on Sumerian clay tablets dating back to 2100 BC.

Aloe has over 75 active components including vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, polysaccharides and fatty acids. Clinical research has proven its ability to heal skin damage.

How aloe helps skin

Among the most common questions we receive at Lexli are, "why is aloe good for skin?" and "does the base of organic, pharmaceutical-grade aloe vera in every Lexli product really make a difference?" When we say "yes," it isn't just because we believe it; independent clinical research has proven aloe's benefits to the skin. Among them are the following:

Aloe penetrates tissue.

Unlike water, which is used as the base ingredient of most skin care products, aloe can be absorbed deep into the skin’s layers. This is due to aloe’s lignin content – a substance similar to cellulose. Because aloe can be absorbed into the skin, aloe skin care products, like those offered by Lexli, can deliver active ingredients to the site of skin healing, rather than simply sitting on the skin’s surface. Aloe's ability to penetrate the skin also means that its 75+ active components have the ability to soothe and nurture.

Aloe encourages the healing of skin tissue.

Clinical research, including that conducted by Lexli founder, Dr. Ahmed Abdullah, has demonstrated that aloe has an excellent ability to regenerate skin cells. This is due to the presence of gibberellin – a growth hormone-like substance that increases protein synthesis, and lectin – a protein that increases collagen activity and improves the collagen matrix. This fact makes it beneficial to skin that has been damaged by UV exposure, pollution, smoking, acne, eczema and more.

Aloe has antimicrobial properties.

Aloe contains saponin and barbaloin, two components that are proven lethal against bacteria. This allows aloe to be effective in the treatment of skin conditions with a bacterial component, such as acne. Lexli's acne solutions offer a base of organic, pharmaceutical-grade aloe specifically to help combat Cutibacterium Acnes (c. acnes) - the bacteria responsible for acne.

Aloe reduces inflammation.

Aloe contains salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid, and sterols - both of which are recognized for their anti-inflammatory capabilities. Inflammation plays a role in nearly all skin conditions, making this feature extremely advantageous.

Many Skin Care Products Include Aloe In Their Formulations. So What Makes Lexli So Different?

Pharmaceutical-grade aloe

Like other cosmetic ingredients, aloe is available in a range of grades, with cosmetic-grade being the most commonly utilized in skin care products. At Lexli, we only use organic, pharmaceutical-grade aloe, which is free from impurities.

A base of aloe vs. a negligible amount

The main ingredient in Lexli products is organic, pharmaceutical-grade aloe, as evidenced by its position at the top of our ingredient lists. (Ingredient labels must list ingredients in order of concentration.) Many other brands include small amounts of aloe; hardly enough to generate improvements in the skin.

Certified by the International Aloe Science Council

Lexli uses only aloe that has been certified by the International Aloe Science Council (IASC), a non-profit trade organization that is dedicated to providing the world with the highest quality of aloe. IASC certification demonstrates that the aloe has been properly harvested and processed to ensure optimum purity and bioactivity. This is vital because aloe’s active ingredients begin to decompose and lose their effectiveness soon after harvesting if not handled properly.
